** Economic Democracy Weekly
------------------------------------------------------------
In this Economic Democracy Weekly, we focus on the “democracy” part of economic democracy. Our lead story features a call for universities to jettison their allegiance to the market and rededicate themselves to educating a democratic citizenry. A second article looks at the building of advocacy networks in Puerto Rico, backed by a $40 million investment over four years from the Hispanic Federation. A third article looks at advocacy from a very different vantage point—an interview account of the first successful tenant buyout of a property under a new law in California. Our last article looks at donor giving in 2020; one key takeaway from the data is that nonprofit calls for philanthropy to step up amid COVID led to a nearly $12 billion increase in grantmaking.
