UPDATE: Following Saturday’s devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake, Haiti is now contending with the effects of Tropical Storm Grace, compounding the need for urgent aid.
Our teams are currently in the small town of Port-Salut and the cities of Jérémie and Port-au-Prince, stabilizing the wounded and providing surgical and follow-up care. MSF is also preparing to scale up its response in other areas, including in remote municipalities in the affected areas that are harder to reach.
MSF is working to reinforce operations as quickly as possible by sending additional medical equipment like first aid kits, tents for emergency clinics, medicines and supplies for blood transfusions and plaster casts, as well as additional medical teams, including surgeons, to care for injured people.
Friend: On Saturday morning, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southwestern Haiti. The earthquake extensively damaged and destroyed homes and infrastructure, including medical facilities. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is on the ground responding to urgent medical needs right now.
With the provisional death toll currently at 1,297 and thousands more injured, our teams are working in the Grand Anse, Nippes, and Sud provinces to provide much needed medical support and supplies.
Some hospitals have had to evacuate their patients. Aftershocks and landslides have caused additional damage. One MSF team is facing difficult obstacles as it works to assess the devastating damage and transport patients from a remote area to receive care.
In the coming days, MSF plans to send more medical teams to southern Haiti, including surgeons.
