John,
A year ago today, we called for Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to quit or be fired.
Last night, we had a big win that will give us more answers about DeJoy’s ethics issues: a judge ruled that the US Postal Service has to turn over documents about DeJoy’s potential conflicts of interest. For more, read our statement.
Over the past seven years, the USPS has reportedly paid approximately $286 million to XPO Logistics, DeJoy’s ex-employer, and has “ramped up its business” with the company since DeJoy’s appointment as Postmaster General. After his appointment, DeJoy continued to hold financial interests in XPO totaling between $30 and $75 million. DeJoy also held a significant amount of stock in Amazon, a major USPS competitor.
This raises serious questions about DeJoy’s conflicts of interest—and when the USPS refused to turn over documents about these conflicts and how they would be addressed, we sued. Last night, the judge ruled in CREW’s favor, ordering the agency to turn over the documents, citing the strong public interest in the information.
This is a victory for transparency, and it should help us finally get some answers about DeJoy’s financial interests. However, we’re not going to stop fighting until DeJoy’s gone from the US Postal Service—because it’s long past time for DeJoy’s ethics issues and attacks on the Postal Service to end.
Thank you,
The CREW Team
