At long last, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4) has been reintroduced in the House of Representatives. Almost 20 GOP-controlled states have passed at least 30 laws that throttle access to the ballot box this year alone, and hundreds of other vote suppression bills have been introduced during that same time.
It’s abundantly clear that millions of eligible voters across the country need the protections of H.R. 4.
Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL) announced the bill’s reintroduction in front of the same Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma where 56 years ago John Lewis himself was beaten nearly to death in the fight for voting rights. Rep. Lewis knew that the protections provided by the Voting Rights Act – first passed five months after Bloody Sunday – were worth laying down his life.
Our fight today is just as fierce, and we cannot lose sight of what’s important: Ensuring access to the ballot box by every single eligible voter, no matter what they look like or where they live. House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has vowed to bring H.R. 4 to a vote as soon as they return from their recess, and we need to hold them to their promise.
