Are you a student or teacher at a public school, or a parent or grandparent of a public school student?
Ever since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down enforced prayer in public schools in 1962, religious extremists have been trying to push their beliefs back into classrooms and extracurricular activities. They even have a playbook – Project Blitz – to try and pass state laws that would expose schoolchildren to their Christian nationalist beliefs.
Next week, in time for back-to-school, AU will release three guides to religious freedom in public schools for students, teachers and parents. Until then, see if you know some key facts about rights and responsibilities in public schools. Click here to take the survey!
Public schools educate 90% of American students. It’s our job – yours and mine – to make sure that no one forgets that the First Amendment promises all of us freedom of religion – and to make sure that our public schools and their staff live up to that promise.
Good luck!
