Dear John,

You may recall our ‘Happy Mums, Happy Tums’ appeal, which we ran during winter 2019. This appeal specifically raised funds for a project supporting mothers and young children in rural Sierra Leone to improve their health and nutrition.

Altogether, we were able to raise £212,505, including £100,788 of match funding from the UK government, towards this vital work. On behalf of the communities that we work with in Sierra Leone, I would like to thank all the generous donors who responded to this appeal.

One of the biggest challenges families face in rural Sierra Leone is accessing a balanced and nutritious diet. Over 30% of children aged 6-59 months experience chronic malnutrition and over 5% of pregnant and lactating women experience acute malnutrition*.

Through our ‘Mama en Pikin Welbodi Project’ (meaning ‘mother and child health project’ in Krio) we have been collaborating with health workers and volunteers to improve the health and nutrition of pregnant women and children under five in Bombali and Karene districts for almost a year now.

We train and equip community health workers to support families in remote villages

Our team has already developed close relationships with health workers and community leaders across these districts, who are helping to identify and support those with the greatest need.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have already supported over 3000 mothers and over 3000 children in hard-to-reach villages.

Once again, thank you for all your support. We look forward to updating you on more of the work we are doing alongside our community partners in Sierra Leone over the coming weeks!

Yours sincerely,

Siaffa Bunduka
