From empowering students to make decisions about college and career to enabling schools to re-engage missing students, data continues to be a critical tool for informing recovery efforts.

But our new 2021 public opinion poll ([link removed]) unpacks parent and principal opinions—and uncovers considerable disconnects that could threaten efforts to use data to address the current moment and beyond.

To understand and respond to disrupted post-high school pathways, measure and mitigate unprecedented levels of unfinished learning, and enroll and re-engage students, decisionmakers at all levels must understand how principals and parents perceive data use. These findings can and should help state leaders better understand the challenges they’re working to address and the concrete actions they should take to address them.
