From the desk of David Miliband: Afghanistan has endured crisis after crisis. I hope you can help people affected by this crisis and others worldwide today.

John,

I don't write to you often, but I felt deeply compelled to reach out to you in light of the devastating emergency unfolding in Afghanistan.

As you know, this week has been filled with pain, fear and a high degree of dread for the Afghan people. I watched with horror as Afghanistan fell. My first thoughts were of the families we serve and our courageous IRC staff there. And now I'm also thinking of you, our generous supporters, and your steadfast commitment to the IRC.

Here's what we know so far: Around 550,000 men, women, and children have been rendered homeless by the most recent round of violence. 30,000 are leaving the country each week. Many — like the family pictured above — had to flee with no plan for the future, simply trying to seek safety for themselves and their children.

The situation is rapidly deteriorating, and Afghan civilians are imploring the international community to help. Please make an emergency donation today to help fund our response in Afghanistan and our responses to crises worldwide.

The IRC has been working in Afghanistan for over three decades. We were there during and after the civil war in the 1990's — and we are determined to stay now. We provide shelter, education, clean water, health support and other aid through crisis after crisis. I'm proud to say that our 1,700 staff members, who are nearly all Afghans, have made a difference in millions of lives. It is thanks to the support of our generous donors that we have been able to stay and provide continuous support as long as it is needed.

But right now, we find ourselves at a critical juncture. 18 million Afghans are in dire need of humanitarian aid — double what it was just a year ago — and that number continues to grow by the day. Conflict and COVID-19 have left the humanitarian sector deeply underfunded and thousands of people without access to the resources they need to survive.

The people of this country are being torn apart by violence and fear, and it is not enough to say, "Let them sort it out on their own." We must all do our part right now.

We're counting on supporters like you to step up and help us meet this crucial moment. Please, John, send in your emergency donation right now to provide urgently-needed humanitarian aid to people in crisis in Afghanistan and around the world.

Moments like these are a test of our character and a test of the strength of our commitments as an international community. With your help, we can meet this moment and ensure that families in crisis know they are not alone.

Thank you for your dedication to the people of Afghanistan and others struggling through the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
