This week Port Authority announced a new mobile fare payment program that will allow riders to purchase and pay for fares on their cell phones. This is a long-awaited improvement that will make it easier for people to use the system. However, there are still some big holes in the program. Disabled riders with half-fare cards will need to travel downtown and surrender their card in order to use the app. Parents with young children who ride with half-fare will need to do the same. We want to celebrate this program, but we want everyone at the party. We need a mobile fare payment app that is accessible to all. Check out Margaret J. Krauss' article for WESA below: Read the WESA article image description: text that reads "More affordable Public Transit" Port Authority has some of the most expensive transit fares in the country. Are we going to put up with that for 25 more years? Speak up for the importance of affordable fares in the agency's new long-range plan. While it is great news (and because of rider advocacy) that the Port Authority has identified fare affordability as a top priority, it is deeply concerning that the Port Authority doesn’t actually propose any solutions, nor any investment to evaluate or plan to make fares more affordable.
