In its Citizens United v. FEC ruling in 2010, the US Supreme Court swept away a century of precedent that barred corporate money in our elections and endorsed the dangerous fiction that corporations have the same constitutional rights as living, breathing people. The most direct result of Citizens United is that corporations can now spend unlimited sums of money to influence our elections, drowning out the voices of everyday Americans.

It was this injustice that inspired Free Speech For People, launched on the same day the Citizens United decision was announced. We founded this organization on the idea that every person in our democracy deserves an equal voice and an equal vote. We have pursued this vision on many fronts over the past decade, but one of our first priorities has always been overturning Citizens United and related rulings.

That’s why we’ve joined Daily Kos in sponsoring a petition calling on Congress to overturn Citizens United and end unlimited big money in our elections. Will you join us in securing political equality for the American people?

A democracy’s ability to survive relies on the will of the people to maintain it. The American people have refused to sit idly by while their representatives are bought out from under them. We won’t stop fighting to reclaim our democracy.
