I’m a Democrat, lifelong Ohioan, and consumer advocate. Let me tell you why I'm running.
John,
My name is Morgan Harper. I’m a proud progressive Democrat. I’m a lifelong Ohioan. I’m a consumer protection lawyer and antitrust advocate.
And as of today, I’m officially running to represent Ohio in the U.S. Senate.
This is a wide open U.S. Senate seat in one of the most competitive states. But between you and me, I don’t think Democrats will flip Ohio if we nominate another establishment insider. Ohioans want a senator who’s on their side — someone with a track record of fighting the system, not upholding the status quo.
John, together we can make history and flip Ohio. The first step is showing as much momentum as possible during these first 24 hours. How much money we raise online is a critical part of that, so I’m respectfully asking:
I was born at the Ohio State University Hospital. I spent nine months in foster care before being adopted by my mother Valerie, a public school teacher in Columbus.
Mom raised me and my brother on the east side of the city in a Black and brown neighborhood. She immigrated here from Trinidad and worked hard for our family and our community, even though she didn't get to become a full citizen until I was in my late 20s.
We lived paycheck to paycheck and struggled financially. But I got lucky. I received financial aid to attend Columbus Academy, where doors opened for me that normally wouldn’t for people like me.
That financial break changed everything for me and my family. But it shouldn’t have to be that way. A child’s future shouldn’t be left up to chance or charity.
That’s why I’ve committed my life to fighting inequality — so that every kid can have the opportunities I did regardless of the circumstances of their upbringing.
Thanks to scholarships, I went on to attend Tufts, then Princeton and Stanford. I became a consumer protection lawyer, and got a job at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau fighting to rein in predatory lenders.
Now I’m running for U.S. Senate in Ohio to take on systemic inequality and ensure every Ohio kid has a chance to succeed.
John, it will not be easy. I’m not a career politician. I don’t enter this race with a rolodex of wealthy donors behind me. And, yes, I fully expect the Republicans to spend tens of millions of dollars to keep this Senate seat.
But Ohioans are hungry for change. If millions of us come together now to demand it, we’ll be unstoppable. So I’m asking for your support now.
