John -- The heartbreaking and chaotic scenes coming out of Afghanistan right now have stirred many to speak up in the last few days. Much of the analysis we’ve seen on cable news and the Internet is ill-informed, shaped almost entirely by U.S. policy with little understanding of the nation of Afghanistan or the Afghan people. Worse, the discourse focused on the last 20 years of U.S. occupation ignores the longer history of America’s intervention in Afghanistan, and how that legacy must drive the decisions we make today. After 40 years of American imperialism in this region, we must embrace this moment to confront hard truths about our conduct as a nation, and atone for the harm we have caused, by opening our doors to asylum seekers. We must forge a new paradigm for American foreign policy -- one divested from the war machine and built on a bedrock commitment to human rights and self-determination for all peoples. Let this be the end of American imperialism. Let us end the forever wars and invest in peace. Brand New Congress works year-round to recruit and support candidates who are committed to ending America’s forever wars and building a society where all can thrive. If you would like to support our work, you can make a contribution below.
With love and solidarity for all the people of Afghanistan, The entire team at Brand New Congress
