Folks,
The freeze on federal student loan payments has been a lifeline to millions of Americans struggling financially due to the public health and economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Roughly 1 in 8 Americans carry student loan debt and almost 43 million Americans have federal student loans. Student loan debt totals nearly $1.6 trillion — that’s more than total outstanding credit card debt.
Student debt prevents many Americans from buying homes, supporting their families, and achieving financial stability. For many borrowers, the cost of a college education is so high that they cannot complete their degrees — and yet they are still repaying their loans years, sometimes decades later.
President Biden expanded the final pause on federal student loan debt until 2022, but we need to go further.
We must cancel student debt to provide significant relief to Americans across the country. Sign my petition telling President Biden he has executive authority to cancel student debt.
We can’t let this crisis continue to hold back our economy and disadvantage everyday Americans working to make ends meet.
Too many Americans can’t afford to adequately support their families due to crippling student debt. By disproportionately impacting people of color, the student debt crisis exacerbates the racial wealth gap and perpetuates structural discrimination.
The time to act is now — we must cancel student debt to boost the economy, address racial disparities, and help millions of Americans get back on their feet.
If you’re with me, sign my petition calling on President Biden to cancel student debt.
Thank you for your continued support.
