Last week, the Census data that’s used for redrawing congressional maps was released, giving the GOP yet another chance to entrench their power by drawing hyper-partisan redistricting lines and diluting Democratic votes in key districts. And, John, the Supreme Court will do absolutely nothing to stop them.
The Supreme Court’s refusal to hear any partisan gerrymandering case could be the demise of our democracy. Unless Congress makes Court reform an immediate priority, the illegitimate Republican supermajority on the Court will continue to greenlight this increasingly undemocratic practice.

The Supreme Court’s history with partisan gerrymandering cases is pretty grim...
- For decades, voting rights organizations brought partisan gerrymandering cases to the Court to show how extreme and undemocratic the practice had become.
- The Court repeatedly admitted that there could be a point at which partisan gerrymandering is deemed unconstitutional, but didn’t think any of the cases brought to them had reached that point.
- But two years ago, in Rucho v. Common Cause, the Court decided that federal courts don’t have any jurisdiction to make a decision on partisan gerrymandering. From the Supreme Court down to the federal district courts, there is no legal challenge to partisan gerrymandering.
The Supreme Court left voters with no place to go to challenge this undemocratic practice. This decision was a huge blow to voting rights -- and to the very fabric of our democracy.
By opting out of partisan gerrymandering cases, the Court has made it easier for Republican lawmakers to cement their minority rule with zero backlash.
Now that states will have the opportunity to redraw their district lines as soon as this fall, nothing will stop the GOP from silencing voters across the country as they see fit.
The Supreme Court is enabling voter suppression. We are calling on our elected leaders in Congress to immediately pass the Judiciary Act, the game-changing legislation that will expand the Supreme Court by four seats, restoring balance and legitimacy to a bench that serves Republican Party interests over the interests of American voters.
