Wildfires. Heat waves. Drought. Floods.
All across America and around the world people are experiencing severe weather events brought on by our rapidly warming planet. We have all but locked ourselves into a hotter future, John.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released an alarming report outlining how human-made climate change has warmed the planet leading to severe weather events. The report concluded that if we don’t make a strong effort to reduce carbon emissions starting now, we’re in for a much hotter future.
Why did it take so long for America to take climate change seriously?
Fossil fuel companies have spent decades deceiving the public about the harmful effects fossil fuel pollution has on our climate. An investigation by InsideClimateNews discovered that ExxonMobil knew as far back as 1977 about the disastrous impacts fossil fuels have on our climate. Since then ExxonMobil has spent millions to promote misinformation and greenwash its role in the climate crisis.
But it’s not just the fossil fuel industry we’re up against. Climate misinformation is being spread on rightwing websites and social media at alarming rates. According to the Associated Press, a rightwing website published a false claim that President Biden’s energy policies were responsible for the deadly blackouts in Texas. Fast forward to the next day: The false claim was shared 70,000 times on Facebook and Twitter.
Corporate misinformation is never just about short term gains. The fossil fuel industry made a conscious decision to mislead the public for more than 40 years about the dangers of climate change. And the American people are now paying the price for their greed and lies.
