While the situation continues to evolve, it's clear that the poorly timed and planned U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan has caused a humanitarian tragedy and will have negative consequences for years to come.
Throughout my career in Congress, I have followed the situation in Afghanistan closely - including in my current role as Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee Subcommittee on National Security. Despite hearing from 'experts' who testified otherwise, I am not surprised that the Afghan government hasn't been able to withstand the Taliban.
Moreover, I am deeply disappointed that the Biden Administration has not done more to protect Afghans who risked their lives and the lives of their families to support our mission. I will work to ensure we hold those accountable for failing to protect the safety and security of American citizens and our allies.
The brave Americans and Afghan allies who remain in Afghanistan cannot be left behind as it is our duty to protect them from the onslaught from the Taliban that is sure to come.
As your representative, I will do what I can to ensure that the efforts and sacrifices put forth by Americans and our allies in the Middle East are not in vain. I hope you will join me in prayer and reflection for a peaceful and humane resolution to the tragic fallout the world is witnessing in Afghanistan.
