As the summer months come to an end, Autism Speaks continues our work
to support the autism community through changes big and small, thanks
to your generous support and advocacy for the autism community.

Being a catalyst for life-enhancing research breakthroughs

Autism Speaks advocated for a package of annual spending bills
that recently passed the U.S. House of Representatives that includes
increased funding for greater autism research investment to address
disparities, life span issues and co-occurring health conditions. This
House-passed language, which accompanies a large increase in the
budget for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), provides a clear
message to the NIH that they should invest in research according to
the budget recommendations from the Interagency Autism Coordinating
Committee and address the key gaps in research that have been
identified: [link removed]

A new study supported in part by Autism Speaks looks at how
autism-linked genetics changes are passed to children. Researchers
found that a woman's genetics could be a factor affecting a
child's autism symptoms more than previously thought, according to a study of mice published in June in the journal Translational Psychiatry. In humans, mutations
in certain autism-linked genes are also strongly linked to other
serious health conditions, such as cancer and heart conditions.
Studying these gene changes help ensure autistic people get
appropriate health care and screenings related to their specific
genetics: [link removed]

Increasing early childhood screening & timely interventions

Make a recovery plan for pandemic learning losses
As school-age children with autism head back to school, the transition
away from established pandemic guidelines may present unforeseen
challenges. The 2021-22 school year may also be a time to refocus
efforts, get back on track and continue to progress with learning
goals. Autism Speaks offers a few important things to keep in mind as
you advocate for yourself or your children and prepare for a successful
year ahead: [link removed]

Improving the transition to adulthood

Purpose-driven, functional mentorships support low-pressure
In July, Autism Speaks hosted several Pathways to Employment events
bringing together autistic workers and job-seekers, businesses and
community services, as well as introduced employment resources
available through our Workplace Inclusion Now (WIN) program. To find
out more about WIN, visit autismspeaks.org/employment.
