President Obama has spoken out against Republican gerrymandering many times in the last few years. But why is achieving fair redistricting so important? Because it's a critical piece of the broader fight to protect our democracy.

Now that state legislators and commissioners have the final data to work with, President Obama says that "We’re at a turning point in the redistricting process." What happens next will determine which direction our country goes in for the next decade or more -- and whether we continue to be a democracy at all.
