You might be aware of the Far Right’s well-funded efforts to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom.
What you might not be aware of is:
- How dangerously close they are to replacing Newsom with a Trump Republican extremist, and
- How much is at stake – for California AND the country…
Recent polling shows a massive enthusiasm gap between Democrats and Republicans. It also shows that Democrats and progressives have not absorbed how real the threat is.
It’s growing increasingly likely that by Thanksgiving, we’ll have a governor of our largest state – and the world’s fifth largest economy – who wants to prohibit the very public safety measures that the public health community agrees are our only shot against COVID, as the Delta variant ravages communities…
In a debate featuring the top Republican candidates in the recall race, every candidate said they wanted to follow Florida Governor Rick DeSantis’s warped COVID policy agenda! An agenda that’s been recognized as not just reckless, but a national disgrace – even by many Republicans.
As the State of California suffers from its worst fire season in years, including the state’s second largest wildfire ever, if current trends hold we could have a GOP governor who dismisses climate science and wants to do away with the progressive environmental policies that California has led on for years.
America’s largest state going the other way on climate policy would drag our country and our world in the exact wrong direction, right as the U.N. warns us that the climate crisis is even worse and more dire than we thought.
Oh, and as bad as the crop of GOP candidates is, according to the polls, the leading GOP candidate is far-right talk show host Larry Elders, an original driving force behind the recall effort who opposes the minimum wage.
The Republican candidates are staking out positions that are extremely unpopular with California voters, but one of them could be the state’s next governor simply due to a lack of awareness and enthusiasm on our side.
Finally, we need to acknowledge the cold, hard reality of Senator Diane Feinstein being 88 years old. If she were to fall ill or have to suddenly retire, a far-right Republican governor naming her replacement could determine party control of the U.S. Senate and put Mitch McConnell back in the Majority Leader’s office.
So what will People For the American Way be doing to head off this crisis?
- Mobilizing our more than 100,000 California members to vote and get others to vote against the recall…
- Recruiting volunteers for on-the-ground and virtual GOTV activities to make sure Democrats and progressives understand the threat and the urgency of voting in this election…
- Mailing sample ballots to voters – making it is easy as possible for them to fill out and return the mail-in ballots they are receiving starting this month…
- Raising awareness by engaging celebrities and thought leaders to get the word out online and in the press…
We’re doing all of this and more, but we have just FOUR WEEKS from today. That’s a tremendously tight timeframe for such a high-stakes campaign.
So we need your help.
This is an emergency, all-hands-on-deck effort. I know we can count on you and People For’s other dedicated members to avert this catastrophe. We need to act fast.
