Friends,
In recent days, like so many others, I’ve watched the news in horror as the human tragedy in Afghanistan has escalated.
I am heartbroken for the Afghan people and the countless Americans who have served during this decades-long conflict.
I am all too familiar with what it’s like to desperately leave a war-torn country that you call home. It’s devastating. I can’t see the footage on the news without also seeing myself as a young child, fleeing war in Somalia with my family.
War and conflict will never bring peace or stability. We as a country must confront and reckon with the failures of our intervention in Afghanistan over the past 20 years.
But first and foremost, the United States must act to save lives. That starts with us marshaling an international coalition to evacuate every Afghan citizen who is fleeing for their lives and expanding refugee admission programs.
Please join me in calling on the United States to take these crucial humanitarian steps to help the Afghan people by adding your name:
The end of this war does not mean the end of our obligations to the Afghan people. Thank you for speaking out unapologetically for human rights.
In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
