John -- Today is a BIG day.
We are so excited to welcome our friend and national progressive powerhouse Amy Vilela to the slate for 2022! Longtime followers will recall that Amy was one of the original Brand New Congress candidates, where her electric 2018 race was featured in the documentary Knock Down the House.
Since then, Amy has worked hard to build our movement nationwide. She launched a highly successful small business to help progressive candidates and organizations with compliance and accounting needs. And she’s traveled the country campaigning and organizing for Bernie Sanders, Nina Turner, and Cori Bush.
Now she’s running for Congress to represent Las Vegas in NV-01, and we’re determined to help her win. Will you split a contribution between Brand New Congress and Amy’s campaign right now? If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: Amy hasn’t slowed down once in the last four years, because this isn’t about politics for her -- it’s personal.
She has experienced our broken systems and the pain they cause firsthand. Raised in poverty by a single-mother, and previously a single-mother herself, Amy has relied on programs like SNAP and WIC to get by.
She knows what it’s like to be evicted and to choose between putting food on the table or paying the bills. Through it all, Amy remained a fighter -- overcoming poverty by working multiple jobs to put herself through college and build a successful career.
Amy’s world was forever changed when she lost her oldest daughter, Shalynne, to our nation’s profit-driven healthcare system. Shalynne was denied care because she couldn’t provide adequate proof of insurance to the local emergency room. This launched Amy’s crusade to advocate and organize for single-payer healthcare -- and ultimately led to her first run for Congress.
Even as she has traveled the country, Amy has stayed rooted in Las Vegas. She helped organize mutual aid for families impacted by the pandemic, and, after helping Bernie win Nevada, worked to get progressives into leadership of the state Democratic party to push our agenda up and down the ballot.
Amy is running for Congress because -- from Covid to climate change --the political status quo is not doing nearly enough to provide for those with the least. It’s time for political leadership who will fight like lives depend on it, because they do. Amy knows that. She’s running because we deserve more.
We can’t wait to see Amy join Cori, AOC, and all the other progressive fighters in Congress. Let’s get her elected!
