Many of us have been glued to the news coming out of Afghanistan today. After 20 years of war, unimaginable violence, and so many lives lost, it’s heartbreaking to see a worsening humanitarian crisis unfold before our eyes. (You can catch up on the news here.)
Our focus now must be on the safety of the people who remain in Afghanistan — American citizens, our allies, and those in danger of violent retribution from the Taliban.
The U.S. has a moral obligation to the Afghan people. Our role in creating this crisis is indisputable. Now, we must spare no time or expense in evacuating as many refugees as possible, safely and swiftly.

If you are in the United States and wish to help people fleeing Afghanistan, you can sign up here to volunteer for airport pickup, apartment setups, and/or meals for Afghans with the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service.
After all that we have done, the bare minimum we must do is extend safe passage to as many refugees as possible, and provide support as they rebuild their lives.
In the coming days, it’s up to us to keep up the pressure on lawmakers and government officials to do right by the people of Afghanistan and open our doors in this moment of crisis.
