Hi,
Our thoughts this week are with the people of Afghanistan and the hundreds of thousands of Americans who served there honorably over the last 20 years. Our work here at New Politics is grounded in a belief that a revitalized democracy requires from every American, an equal stake. No matter where you stand on the ideological spectrum, the health of our democracy is dependent on an engaged citizenry, especially so in matters of blood and treasure.
The troubled legacy of our 20-year Global War on Terror isn’t a Republican or Democratic story, nor are the scenes playing out in Kabul today the result of one party’s missteps or one policy failure. They belong to every American. For far too long, leaders and citizens alike have paid lip service to support for the troops, all while kicking the can of accountability down the road and asking the same small group of Americans to shoulder the burden of our collective cowardice.
The tragedy unfolding in Afghanistan serves as a reminder of the importance of electing servant leaders who have not only seen firsthand both the horror and folly of war, but for whom accountability and responsibility are more than just words. Our democracy requires leaders who will take responsibility for where, when, and how our government sends Americans into conflict. And, it requires engaged citizens who demand accountability and sober deliberation from those very leaders. We will continue to fight for the democracy we deserve by electing a new generation of leaders committed to selflessly serving their country.
