August 21: Branch Meetings! Have you RSVP'ed yet?
|
Saturday, August 21 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
|
Las 5 reuniones de la ramas serán accesibles tanto en inglés como en español. Para obtener más información en español, haga clic aquí.
DSA-LA is divided into 5 regional branches. That's so members can organize with the people who live closest to them and adapt our countywide goals to their local conditions!
Members are mobilized to work on campaigns through their branches, and we meet multiple times a year to learn about socialism and discuss current strategies and ways to get involved. Every member is encouraged to attend their branch meetings.
This month, we're going to continue discussing a new platform that candidates we endorse will have to sign onto: the Democratic Socialist Platform for Los Angeles. We're also going to hear reports from delegates who were at the National Convention and look ahead to our local convention, where we'll make decisions about our own priorities for the coming year.
We can’t wait to see you there! Register by clicking on your branch below:
(Not sure which branch you're a part of? Check the list here!)

Palms & Culver City Neighborhood Meeting
|
Tuesday, August 17 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
|
Neighborhood Meetings are part of DSA-LA’s Neighborhood Solidarity Program—our chapter’s campaign to strengthen and grow socialist organization by uniting with our neighbors through tenant organizing, mutual aid work, and political study.
Our sixth Palms + Culver City Neighborhood Meeting will build on discussions and projects outlined in last meeting, and will include a focus on strategy for connecting with area renters through our ongoing ‘know your rights’ tenant canvassing in the area.
We’ll also spend time in political discussion on struggles for decommodified housing, grounded in this recommended reading: “Unmaking the Real Estate State” an excerpted chapter from Capital City (Stein, 2019, 18 pages); Grounded in a clear assessment of how the state uses and is used by capital (and the unaffordable consequences for working people), this chapter outlines a range of policy and political strategies to facilitate the transfer of private land to the public and drive structural changes in our urban political economy.

In a taste of what’s to come we will be reading The Soul Of Man Under Socialism by Oscar Wilde and Atlantic article by Amanda Mull, American Shoppers Are A Nightmare. Read both pieces in either order, the important part is the dialectic between the two.

Labor Committee August General Meeting

Wednesday, August 18 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
|
Join us on Wednesday, August 18th at 7:00 PM for our monthly Labor Committee meeting. We will be discussing workplace organizing, the labor movement, and opportunities for DSA members to organize and build worker power.
The core of DSA-LA’s labor work is our Labor Circles program. If you are interested in joining a Labor Circle or forming a new Circle, you can begin by filling out the Socialist Workplace Survey. The survey will help us map where we are in LA’s economy and identify where we have workplace, industry and union membership densities to organize around. Take a minute and fill out the Socialist Workplace Survey today!

Green New Deal for Public Schools Working Group Meeting
|
Thursday, August 19 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
|
Winning transformative Green New Deal demands will require accelerated militancy from working class movements demanding radical expansion of public goods. This campaign will engage with the Congressional infrastructure fight to build mobilized constituencies for Green New Deal for Public Schools (GND4PS) legislation and beyond!
The campaign will organize key labor, student, parent and other groups around the bill and for future struggles locally and nationally. We aim to politicize a public institution that exists in every community and from which we can make broad-based demands for aggressive Green New Deal investment in public services and infrastructure.
Join us as we build out the campaign and demand a Green New Deal for Public Schools.

Democratic Socialist Program Townhall
|
Thursday, August 19 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
|
Join us for a discussion and feedback session on the first draft of the Democratic Socialist Program for Los Angeles!
In developing the Democratic Socialist Program (Program) our priority objective is to develop a tool to support our electoral activities and endorsement process for the 2022 elections and beyond. The Program also presents an opportunity to meet several related strategic objectives:
- Differentiate our socialist politics from more general progressive demands;
- Connect our politics with the everyday conditions of working Angelenos;
- Codevelop policy and budget priorities with elected socialists;
- Recruit and build a base in a deliberate and strategic way;
- Present a vision and direction for creating a socialist Los Angeles.
Learn more about the Electoral Committee and the Program on the DSA-LA website. See you at the town hall!
