Dear John:

We've got great opportunities in Support, Education, and Advocacy this week -- and we're celebrating all things senior with World Senior Citizen Day coming up this Saturday, August 21st. Check out our resources and opportunities below--we'll keep you connected!

Support

Supporting LGBTQ+ Seniors | World Senior Citizen Day

World Senior Citizen Day is this Saturday, August 21st, a great time to honor queer elders, who are an integral and important part of the community--and need our support more than ever. We're proud to uplift the work of our friends at SAGE, Advocacy & Services for LGBT Elders, who offer incredible programs for LGBTQ+ seniors and their caretakers.

Know an LGBTQ+ senior in need of support? Try the SAGE National LGBT Elder Hotline, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in English and Spanish, with translation in 180 languages. Through the SAGE hotline, seniors can connect everyone with an LGBT responder who is friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to listen.

Visit sageusa.org/what-we-do/ to learn more about SAGE, and their programs to support LGBTQ+ seniors. And be sure to check out this week's Something to Talk About Live (see below) for more on celebrating World Senior Citizen Day with our friends from SAGE!

Education

Three Steps to Being a Better Advocate for LGBTQ+ Seniors

We’ve got great digital resources so your learning doesn’t have to slow down. Stay safe and take these steps to engage:

  1. Learn: Read about some Facts on LGBTQ+ Aging, learn how to be an ally to Transgender older adults, and check out some stories on the AARP’s LGBT Pride page.
  2. Watch: Check out this video about the importance of good long-term care for LGBTQ seniors. Additionally, stream Stu Maddux’s film Gen Silent with your public library card. (And don't forget to check out this week's Something to Talk About Live!)
  3. Share: Stay up to date with SAGE USA on social media and share some of the great resources above.

Advocacy

March On for Voting Rights

Since January, 48 states have introduced 389 bills that amount to shameful, outright voter suppression, and many have already become law. These laws suppress voting methods that enrich our democracy and lead to high turnout: banning ballot drop boxes and mail-in voting, reducing early voting days and hours, restricting who can get a mail-in ballot, prohibiting officials from promoting the use of of mail-in ballots even when voters qualify, even criminalizing the distribution of water to voters waiting in the long lines these laws create.

Our democracy only works if everyone who has the right to vote can vote. That's why PFLAG National is proud to partner on March On for Voting Rights. We invite you to learn more and join--or host--a march in your city.
