Making Mapperley Cleaner and Safer – Day of Action

day of action

A successful day of action was held on the 1st June whereby partners came together to engage with local communities and work to make Mapperley a cleaner and safer place to live.

On the day CPO’s did a Dog faeces operation on Sycamore Park and engaged with 11 dog walkers all who removed their dog’s faeces. Fly tipping patrols were conducted only to find the area was clean and tidy with no fly tips to investigate.

Public Realm did an excellent job deep cleaning a key street.

Selective Licensing Compliance team visited HMO’s and over 70 properties to connect with tenants. The vast majority were satisfied with their living conditions, their relationship with landlords or management agents.

Community door knocking was conducted on 9 streets, with 11 partners including Councillors, NDOs CPOs, and NCH and Fire service. Residents were provided with a range of information about services and an opportunity to raise concerns.

A community engagement event in partnership with MTVH went well with, 30 Children and young people participating in activities. Stalls shared information and talked to residents. One resident who attended hadn’t seen anyone for over a year.

Overall the Day of Action was positively received by residents who commented that they were pleased to see partner agencies in the area.

Tackling Tree problems

trees

Earlier this spring, the *Council’s Tree Service section undertook routine maintenance pruning on several of the roads lined with lime trees across Mapperley Park.* The work comprises removing the lower branches and vegetation, a ‘crown lift’; stopping branches encroaching unacceptably into the road space; and stopping actionable nuisances where branches could cause direct damage, by touching buildings, fences or other structures. As tree officers, we routinely inspect all trees before recommending works to make sure the any unacceptable risks the tree also presents, are managed during works.

As part of the routine works, a crown lift allows more light underneath the canopy, a more airy feel to the street and allows views further along the street. It meets the current recommendations, but it will not often reduce the size of the tree’s canopy area and the benefits from this are therefore retained.* Our general street tree management technique is to lift the lower level of the canopies as far as possible to try to be as neighbourly as possible.*

As well as our routine maintenance works, Tree Services manage individual enquiries from citizens, often who neighbour the Council’s trees. We are also grateful if citizens can let us know about issues that occur between our tree safety inspections. The Tree Services team can be contacted at [email protected] or a via a dedicated telephone line, 0115 9152705.

Celebrating Nottingham’s Windrush Generation
windrush

We wanted to take time to celebrate the contributions of the many Mapperley residents from commonwealth countries that came here to help rebuild the country after the Second World War. June 22nd marked The National Windrush Day where we took time to commemorate the Windrush Generation.

*The Windrush generation* were people that arrived in the UK between 1948 and 1971 from mainly Caribbean countries. It refers to the ship MV Empire *Windrush*, which docked in Tilbury on 22 June 1948, bringing workers from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and other islands, to help fill post-war UK labour shortages.

We wanted to show respect and honour to you all for the sacrifices you made by leaving your homes, children and family to answer the call from the UK in its time of need.

In addition, we wanted to pay tribute to you all and give our heartfelt thanks to those that endured the many levels of discrimination to work in factories like Raleigh, Players and in the Health service caring for the sick and vulnerable.

Thank you contributing to the economic success of the city and making Nottingham a more vibrant and diverse city for us all to share in.
