Getting Closer to Distance Learning: Online Education in Latin America

As schools in Latin America struggle to reopen amid another wave of the pandemic, online learning platforms remain essential tools. Latin American students have suffered the most lost days of in-person learning of any region. Today, most of Latin America has partially reopened classrooms, but schools in several countries in the region remain fully closed. That has left many children still dependent upon recorded TV programs and radio broadcasts for learning. Renewed social distancing measures are also disrupting university teaching. In the long-term, these educational losses could reduce the region’s potential GDP by 16 percent, according to the World Bank.

Rolling out a Vaccine for COVID-19: Present Prospects and Lessons from the Past

The Wilson Center’s Maternal Health Initiative, in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh, March of Dimes, and the Jonas Salk Legacy Foundation, hosted a discussion with scientists and researchers on ongoing COVID-19 vaccine development initiatives; current challenges and public trust in the process; crucial lessons from previous vaccine development efforts; and questions about safe and equitable distribution, availability, access, and uptake.

Asian Interests and the Path Forward in the New Arctic

In light of common interests and prospects for cooperation in the Arctic, this international virtual symposium convened representatives, scholars, and experts from Japan, the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, and the United States to share their countries’ unique Arctic interests and policies.

Malign Creativity: How Gender, Sex, and Lies are Weaponized Against Women Online is a landmark research study that explores gendered abuse and disinformation across six social media platforms over two months in late 2020. In the study, the Wilson Center and Moonshot CVE define, quantify, and evaluate the use of online gendered and sexualized abuse and disinformation campaigns against women in public life, and strive to build awareness of the direct and indirect impacts of the phenomenon. The study provides recommendations for social media platforms, government policymakers, and employers to mitigate the problem in service of a more equitable, democratic future.

The Refugee Question in the Middle East: Towards Sustainable Solutions

On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, the Middle East Program and the Atlantic Council IN TURKEY hosted a panel highlighting regional voices about the challenges refugees are facing in the region, with a focus on Syrian women, youth, and children, together with practitioners in the field who understand what strategies have worked so far to address the displaced people’s needs beyond the basic humanitarian packages including the capacity of host communities to strengthen resilience and promote social cohesion.
