The time has come. Four days ago, the Census Bureau released the data states need to draw the next decade's worth of legislative maps. As I write this, some state legislators and redistricting commissioners are working on the first drafts of those maps -- and unfortunately, many Republicans are working feverishly to make sure those maps create an unfair advantage for their party.
John, if you've been waiting to get engaged in this fight for fair elections and a democracy that works for the people, I need you now. Can you make a financial investment -- even a few dollars -- to help us stop partisan and racial gerrymandering at this critical moment?
Republican machinations to obstruct fair political representation have already begun. In Michigan, people connected to the new state independent redistricting commission hired a law firm with a history of defending gerrymandered maps. This is an indication of what we can expect from the GOP, even in states where the people have installed independent redistricting commissions. They will adapt and camouflage themselves to advance their political agenda.
John, this is just one of the many hurdles we'll have to deal with over the next several months as we work to secure maps that are as fair as possible across the country.
And that's why I need you now. The next months will be incredibly fast-paced and we're going to need every member of this community to stay sharp and be ready to engage when Republicans inevitably try to skew the redistricting process.
