National Harm Reduction Coalition creates spaces for dialogue and action that help heal the harms caused by racialized drug policies. + INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY: Tuesday, August 31 is #IOAD2021, a day when we deepen our work to end overdose, acknowledge our collective and individual grief, renew our commitment to reducing stigma associated with drug use and raise awareness of the important truth that overdose deaths are preventable. Check out @OverdoseDay on Twitter and watch our social media all month as we share resources, events, and fuel for thought leading up to International Overdose Awareness Day + TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE: NHRC is offering a late summer series of virtual technical assistance sessions for harm reduction programs. The series will kick off on August 16th and run through the end of September and include a range of large-group webinars, smaller group discussion sessions and 1-1 sessions for individual programs focused on a range of organizational development topics. We are just putting the finishing touches on this program. Please be on the lookout for a mailing in the next week with registration information. Register here. + GRIEF WORKSHOP: Facing death and the grief that comes along is never easy. When the death is due to an overdose, or happens to a person who uses drugs, the death is often met with lack of understanding and sympathy. In this two-hour session, the DOPE Project will hold space for unpacking complex feelings around grief and death, share strategies for processing grief, and brainstorm organizational and institutional supports needed to sustainably hold grief around overdose in the time of COVID. Please note that this space is for people who are interested in unpacking their own grief, and not a space for learning about grief or witnessing others in their grief. RSVP

Maia Szalavitz’ new book, Undoing Drugs: The Untold Story of Harm Reduction and the Future of Addiction is the first to spotlight this history. This panel, facilitated by National Harm Reduction Coalition medical director Dr. Kim Sue, will explore the past, present and future of harm reduction and will include Monique Tula, executive director of the NHRC, Sessi Blanchard and Szalavitz.
