Colorado GOP Statement on Afghanistan

Greenwood Village, CO -- Today, Colorado GOP Chairwoman Kristi Burton Brown released the following statement regarding the heartbreaking and national security defining images we are seeing in Afghanistan:

"I am completely heartbroken to see the tragic and terrifying images coming out of Afghanistan. Just weeks ago, we were assured by President Biden and top Administration officials that this would not be another Saigon. Today, most of Kabul is under Taliban control and President Biden is vacationing. This dereliction of duty will cost thousands of women, children, and American allies their lives.

"I hope that Sen. Bennet, Senator Hickenlooper, Rep. Perlmutter, Rep. Crow and the rest of our Colorado Democrat delegation members will put aside their blind loyalty to President Biden and demand that the President return from vacation, address the nation, and explain how the Administration plans to protect U.S. security interests, our brave men and women who are still on the ground, and the allies across Afghanistan who have stood with us in this fight against Islamic terrorism.

"The Biden-Harris Administration and Democrats in Congress have been asleep at the wheel. This is a tragic failure of leadership for which there is no excuse."

Additional Background:
* Just last month, President Biden stated that ([link removed]) his Administration would not let this become another Vietnam where people are being airlifted off of roofs. Today, that seems like a 100% factually inaccurate statement.
+ Via the Associated Press ([link removed]) : "The city was gripped by panic, with helicopters racing overhead throughout the day to evacuate personnel from the U.S. Embassy. Smoke rose near the compound as staff destroyed important documents, and the American flag was lowered. Several other Western missions also prepared to pull their people out."

(Left: Today, Helicopters evacuating the U.S. Embassy as the Taliban captures Kabul. Right: 1975, Helicopters evacuating the U.S. Embassy in Saigon as the Viet Cong takes control)
* "Kabul is now effectively under ([link removed]) Taliban control."
* Earlier this month, Rep. Perlmutter stood with ([link removed]) Rep. Ilhan Omar in demanding that Biden close Guantanamo Bay and "act immediately to further reduce its population.
+ Senator Bennet has already previously voted to close Guantanamo Bay."
