Dear John, In the next couple of weeks the Biden Administration is going to decide if they will withhold $300 million in military aid to Egypt over the country’s human rights record. Call on Secretary Blinken to withhold the $300 million in military aid to the Sisi regime! Egypt is one of the largest recipients of military aid from the United States, second only to Israel. Every year, Egypt receives $1 billion in aid from the US with no strings attached. On top of the $1 billion, the US is currently deciding on whether or not to send another $300 million, based on Egypt’s human rights “progress.” For years, President Sisi has cracked down on political speech by throwing activists in prison and even ordering their execution. During a recent Facebook live event with former Egyptian political prisoner Mohamed Soltan, Senator Chris Murphy said that he worries “about the signal we send to the entire world if we allow the Sisi government to continue its campaign of locking up tens of thousands of political prisoners––torturing them. The rest of the world notices when the United States talks tough on human rights and democracy, but then we don't do anything about it.” Until President Sisi improves his human rights record, halts executions, and frees political prisoners, we need to call on Secretary Blinken to halt military aid to Egypt! When Biden came into office earlier this year, he and Secretary Blinken said they would be putting human rights at the center of their foreign policy. But when they keep funding and arming regimes like the ones in Egypt, Israel, and Saudi Arabia, they are sending the exact opposite message to the world. It’s time to pile the pressure on! Tell Blinken to stop funding Egypt’s political repression! Towards Peace, Toward
