Dear Friend, I am optimistic. On Monday, Canadians will be able to vote for what we want. Every single citizen has power. Between now and then – please talk to everyone. Ask the server in the coffee shop, the barber – or hair dresser – the bus driver – the taxi driver – “Do you usually vote? Talk to your best friend – the friend you have kept all these years because you never talk about politics. Now – talk about politics. The only vote for meaningful climate action is a Green vote. Green candidates across the country are receiving an unprecedented outpouring of support. In the face of outrageously false and negative attacks, we have stayed on the high road - true to our principles and focused on our vision for Canada and the world. The stakes in this election could not be higher. From the looming climate crisis, to the urgent need to bring in universal pharmacare and dental for low income Canadians, to justice and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, this election is critical – not just for our country, but for the world. Without transformational action, the window on holding global average temperature increase to no more than 1.5 degrees C will close before the next federal election. This is our last chance to arrest global warming at levels to which we can survive. Global negotiations need a climate leader. It could be Canada. To make that happen, Canada needs a strong caucus of Green MPs. From rural Nova Scotia and small-town B.C. to the busy streets of Toronto and Vancouver, Canadians have shared their stories – and their hopes – with me. They are counting on Greens to make waves in this election. We cannot wait any longer for real progress. Tragically, the other parties have failed to put forward plans to meet he urgency of the climate emergency. Being the Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands and the Leader of the Green Party for the past eight years has been the greatest honour of my life. In the years since I was first elected in 2011, Greens have seen tremendous growth in all parts of Canada: from B.C. where Greens hold the balance of power, to Prince Edward Island where Greens are the official opposition, to New Brunswick’s inspiring caucus, to Ontario where we elected the first Green MPP in 2018, Green growth is undeniable. I have spent months travelling the country sharing our vision and working to earn the trust of Canadians. But on election day, the future of Canada lies in the hands of voters. The choice is yours. I hope you’ll trust the Green Party of Canada to treat your vote as a sacred obligation of service. And if you honour us with your vote, I give you my word; we will not let you down. In love and hope, Elizabeth May P.S. if you have already voted, thank you! And if not, please make sure to get out to the polls this Monday, October 21 elections.ca has all the information on where and how to vote. |
