Jack,

Eighty-six years ago today, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, giving Americans the economic security they deserved, after a lifetime of hard work, when they retired.

As ranking members of Congress surrounded FDR, he signed into law a historic act, which guaranteed an income for both the unemployed and retirees, commending the law as a “patriotic act.”

But continuing America’s commitment to social security, protecting the benefits people have earned through hard work, and living out their golden years free from financial worry, will be determined by who we elect.

Those who oppose social security have in recent years proposed budgets that would gut funding for Social Security. They want to turn it into a private voucher system -- which would leave millions of people’s retirement funds on the chopping block.

That’s why I am fighting right now to protect your voting rights, making sure our elections are free and fair, so that important legislation, like the Social Security Act, continues to improve people’s lives.

We’ve worked so hard to maintain the victories we’ve won, like Social Security, and now is not the time to take the pedal off of the gas. So I want to celebrate the birthday of this historic act that has enriched so many people’s lives. Will you chip in now to help me fight for your rights >>

Social Security provides a fundamental safety net for our middle class. Privatizing it will have immediate and far-reaching effects -- and we need to mobilize against any further attacks on Social Security.

I'm proud to say that New Mexico continues to be a leader in progressive legislation, and for these past 86 years, we've kept that promise to Americans: if you work hard, you'll be able to retire with dignity and the necessary financial support.

I’m up for re-election soon, and I am committed to improving people’s lives. I want to make your life better, and I will fight for legislation that expands voting rights so that your voice is always heard.

That's why today, on the anniversary of this historic act, I'm asking you to chip in now so I can keep fighting for voting rights so we can continue to elect leaders who will keep America’s promise to those who have earned it. Can I count on you to help me fight for increased ballot access so we can America’s promise to our seniors?
