** Update on Avian Disease - Advice on Feeding Birds
“When can I put my feeders up again?”

Unfortunately, the answer is, “not yet.” ASNV has been following the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ advice for “affected areas,” which include Northern Virginia. The mysterious avian disease remains unexplained although researchers from Cornell Lab of Ornithology have conducted research about its correlation to the brood X cicada emergence; news report here ([link removed]) . Cornell continues to advise against feeding birds in our area. The following is Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ July 28^th update on the issue:

DWR continues to recommend that people discontinue bird feeding in the affected areas until further notice. For the remainder of the state, DWR advises removing bird feeders anytime multiple dead birds are observed on a property over a short period of time. Feeders and bird baths should be disinfected with a 10% bleach solution (one part bleach mixed with nine parts water), rinsed with water, and allowed to air dry. Generally, for the health of wild birds, it is a good practice to disinfect bird feeders and baths at least every two weeks.
