Today marks the 86th anniversary of the Social Security Act. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed this legislation into law on August 14th, 1935, and ever since, social security has provided seniors a continued income after retirement.

For decades, Central Virginia’s workers have paid into Social Security with the understanding that they were paying for retirement security later in life. I am wholly committed to protecting social security and ensuring the program receives the urgent attention it deserves.

We promise hard-working Americans that the benefits will be there when they need them if they pay their fair share into social security throughout their working career. We must keep that promise by defending social security.

I oppose any attempts to privatize social security or to cut benefits. Seniors have come to depend on social security to support themselves post-retirement. Especially now, as the pandemic has worsened economic conditions for so many families, we must ensure that social security stays effective for those who rely on it.

While some of my colleagues would like to dismantle this program, I am committed to ensuring its solvency and viability so we can meet our obligations to seniors now and long into the future.

On this anniversary of the Social Security Act of 1935, I want to celebrate the life-saving program that has served seniors for generations. In Congress, I will work hard to ensure generations to come continue to reap the benefits of this essential program.
