Yang Gang --
When you surf the web, do you ever click “I agree” on a user agreement without reading the whole thing? Tech companies pretend it’s a choice, but in reality, 99% of us just click that button as quickly as we can. And each time we do, we’re forfeiting all of our personal data while the tech companies get rich at our expense.
If someone else is using your data, you should know about it. If someone else is profiting off of your data, you should get a cut.
A recent study shows that our data is now more valuable than oil! Imagine handing over cash every time they force you to check that box -- because that’s what’s really happening.
In short, I want your data to be yours. That’s why I’ve proposed to make tech companies share the economic value of any data they collect from you.
This could be a win-win for many tech companies. Individuals would have the option to de-anonymize their data and sell it to tech companies who are happy to pay for it. Or, they could simply refuse to take part and keep your data private.
Sign this petition if you believe that tech companies shouldn’t be able to get rich off our data without giving us our fair share.
If somebody is profiting from our data, and we decide willingly to partner with a company that’s making use of this information -- then that’s only fair as long as we get a slice. Right now, we’re unaware of the value that’s changing hands and we’re definitely not getting a data check in the mail.
Thanks for lending your voice on this important issue.
