86 years ago today, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Social Security
into law, revolutionizing the way seniors live in our country. It was a
historic achievement that was the foundation of the social safety net
Americans have today.

But Congress has not acted to increase Social Security’s benefits in 50
years. And if no action is taken, beneficiaries will see an
across-the-board benefit cut of 20% by 2034. It’s clear we need to take
significant action right away to protect the social safety net.

Social Security is the most successful social insurance program in our
country’s history. So we need to invest in fixing gaps in coverage that
exist for many of its recipients – especially the five million seniors
every year who still live in poverty. For about 40% of beneficiaries, it
provides a majority of their income, but it is often not enough for
seniors to live and thrive on in our current environment.

With so much having changed in the past five decades, it’s clear that we
need to extend the lifespan of the trust fund, expand benefits to meet our
current needs, and pay for these expansions by making the rich pay their
fair share. We need you to work with us to protect our seniors and secure
all of our futures by making Social Security the insurance program it can
and should be.
