The most definitive scientific report ever on climate change, just
released by the United Nations, warns that the climate crisis is
accelerating in unprecedented and irreversible ways.^1 The U.N. chief
calls the report—which was approved by 195 governments and based on more
than 14,000 studies—"a code red for humanity."^2

The authors of the report say that while a hotter future is certain, the
worst of the climate catastrophe can be avoided—but we are running out of
time to act.

John, the past five years have been the hottest on record since
1850. And without urgent action, temperatures will continue to rise and
the consequences will be utterly devastating.

According to The New York Times:

* Nearly 1 billion people worldwide could swelter in more frequent
life-threatening heat waves.^3
* Hundreds of millions more would struggle for water because of severe
droughts.^4
* Some animal and plant species alive today will be gone.^5
* Coral reefs, which sustain fisheries for large swaths of the globe,
will suffer more frequent mass die-offs.^6

We're on the brink of a mass extinction of species and widespread human
suffering, with the worst impacts hitting poorer countries and
marginalized communities in the United States and other wealthy nations.
But we can prevent the worst of the climate crisis by coming together to
pressure lawmakers to rein in the fossil fuel industry and transition us
to an economy and society that places the planet before profits.

While members of Congress are on recess in their districts over the next
month, MoveOn will hold events, run ads, and directly confront elected
officials to call on them to take immediate legislative action to address
the climate crisis and protect the future of our planet.
