Now that the House has voted to impeach the president, it's time for the Senate to convict and hold Trump accountable for anti-democratic and violent behavior immediately.

We've seen the consequences of Trump's repeated lies about the outcome of the presidential election and violent, racist rhetoric: the erosion of trust in our democracy and government, and the incitement of a deadly mob of white supremacist militants to storm the Capitol, leading to dozens of people injured and multiple deaths.

We deserve a president who respects the will of the voters and ensures a peaceful transition of power ? not one who refuses to take responsibility for encouraging violence and insurrection.

Once Trump has left office, a conviction can disqualify him from future office, curtail his post-office benefits, and sets a critical precedent that efforts to overturn free and fair elections are not tolerated.
