Will you stand up for Social Security?

This Saturday marks the 86th anniversary of Social Security.

Social Security is a promise to Americans that if you work hard and pay into the system, then you’ll be able to retire with dignity. But for a huge portion of Social Security recipients, the program has not kept up with the rising costs of living and raising a family.

The Supplemental Security Income program, which is administered by the Social Security Administration, is designed to lift up older and disabled Americans out of poverty. There are nearly 8 million Americans enrolled, including 1 million disabled children.

But the SSI benefit -- a max of $9,530 per year for individuals and $14,293 for couples -- hasn’t been updated in years and remains below the federal poverty line. And for the majority of recipients, SSI benefits are their sole source of income.

This legislation would be the biggest update to SSI benefits in decades, raising the benefit above the poverty line and lifting up 1.4 million Americans out of poverty this year alone.

Our grassroots movement for the Dignity of Work is all about fighting for everyday Americans who have been ignored in favor of powerful special interests and Wall Street. And for too long, poor and disabled Americans have been neglected. This bill would help remedy that.

In honor of its anniversary, I want to gather 8,600 signatures by Saturday in support of Social Security. Please add your name to mine today.

With gratitude,

Sherrod
