As we enter Muharram, we remember those who have come before us.

Assalamu'alaykum John,

Muharram is a month of remembrance. It’s a time to remember those who have come before and to acknowledge their suffering.

And so, as September approaches, we remember the suffering caused by the events on 9/11. Many lost their lives in that tragedy, and many others suffered because of the loss of loved ones. Lives were irrevocably changed on that day.

Muharram provides us with the opportunity to grieve not just for those whose lives have been lost, but also alongside those who continue to live with those losses and with the consequences of those events.

That’s why we also remember those who suffered in the aftermath of 9/11. Suspicion of the Muslim community in the days, weeks, and months that followed those terrible events was the impetus for creating the Muslim Legal Fund of America. We could not stand by while persons who were not responsible for what had happened were being blamed for it. We wanted it made very clear that one injustice does not justify another.

At MLFA, we will continue to do all we possibly can to stand up against injustice in all its forms.
With Gratitude,
Arshia Ali-Khan,
Interim CEO & Chief Development Officer
