John,

Last week, the United States pulled out of northern Syria as Turkey gears up for a new military offensive. The sudden withdrawal of U.S. troops is endangering our Kurdish allies and could enable a resurgence by the Islamic State.

The United States has been in Syria since 2014 in an attempt to rid the region of ISIS. Our mission has been largely successful, but the situation on the ground is fragile. This decision from the Trump administration is short-sighted and potentially catastrophic.

Removing our forces will destabilize an already tenuous region and could create an environment where terrorist groups like ISIS can re-emerge and grow stronger. We have already seen innocent lives lost, and unfortunately, we are sure to see more.

Abandoning our Kurdish allies further endangers our standing on the global stage. Misguided decisions abroad will make it more difficult to recruit and retain allies around the world as partners. We need strong allies to defeat terrorist organizations hiding around the world that threaten our way of life at home. Our allies need to know that we will always stand with them, and our adversaries need to know that we won’t give up or back down.

How we choose to act on the world stage has serious implications – our national security and the lives of our allies on the ground are at stake. I’ll be working across the aisle with my colleagues in Congress to push this administration to do the right thing here.

Thanks,

-- Matt
