The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs

Dear John,

In a new episode of Health Affairs This Week
, Rob
Lott and Jeff Byers discuss how public transportation affects health.

Paid Sick Leave At Olive Garden

In an August 2021 paper in Health Affairs, Daniel Schneider and
coauthors explore the effects of public pressure on Olive Garden, the
multistate casual dining chain, to expand paid sick leave

amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, the federal
government required employers with between 50 and 500 employees to
provide paid sick leave to employees who may have contracted the virus,
among other requirements. Large firms like Olive Garden, however, were
exempt.

In their analysis, Schneider and coauthors observed a sustainable and
significant increase in the share of Olive Garden workers reporting
access to paid sick leave, from 23 percent in spring 2019 to 66 percent
in spring 2020.

They additionally found evidence that Olive Garden's paid sick leave
expansion reduced the incidence of presenteeism, or working while ill,
among front-line food service workers, promoting both worker health and
public health.
