Washington Post: "Texas House speaker signs arrest warrants for Democrats who broke quorum over voting restrictions"
You read that correctly, team — Texas House Democrats could be arrested for fighting for voting rights.
It all started last month, when the Texas House Republican majority brought forward voter suppression legislation designed to block as many people from the ballot box as they could.
In response, the Texas Democrats did right by their state and their country — breaking quorum so the Texas GOP couldn’t pass blatant voter suppression legislation.
A number of Democrats even traveled to D.C. to call on the U.S. Senate to finally pass the For the People Act — critical voting rights legislation passed by the House that would protect and expand the right to vote and root out dark money and corruption from our politics. This bill is especially important at a time when, this year alone, 18 states have enacted 30 laws to make it harder to vote.
But now, many Texas Democrats — some of whom have not yet returned to Texas in protest of these bills — are facing arrest warrants. All for speaking out for our democracy.
This injustice must end.
Instead of going on vacation, the Senate must vote on the For the People Act at this pivotal moment and protect and expand the right to vote. If you agree, add your name next to Ilhan’s right now:
The more people participate in our democracy, the more it thrives. Thanks for speaking out.
