John -- As Congress continues working to strengthen protections for voting rights, one issue that must be addressed is partisan gerrymandering. A recent op-ed in The Washington Post did not mince words when it comes to the dangers of failing to act:
The Washington Post recently said: "Unless Congress acts quickly, Americans are on the verge of some of the most aggressive gerrymandering in the country’s history. Inevitably, communities of color, which provided almost all of the country’s growth over the past decade, will bear the brunt of this anti-democratic line-drawing.”
As alarming as it may sound, it’s spot on. The Census Bureau just released the data states need to draw their maps yesterday, and this expedited redistricting cycle will be over before we know it.
So unless we move swiftly, Republicans will take full advantage of the ability the Supreme Court has given them to gerrymander the maps. In some cases, the results could be so bad that Republican majorities are impossible to defeat , no matter how folks vote on Election Day!
The NDRC is working around the clock to fight back and end GOP gerrymandering for good. But with the redistricting process already underway, we’re running out of time to make an impact -- and we’re counting on your support to keep going!
