The window for slowing and reversing the most destructive impacts of climate change is narrowing.

That was the takeaway from the annual IPCC report that came out this week, setting off alarm bells that the world is burning and the need for bolder action has never been more urgent.

NYC can and must lead the way, but it will require marshalling every resource in every corner of our government towards this fight.

You may wonder where the Comptroller office fits into this...

The Comptroller's office has a critical role to play in prioritizing green investments, holding financial institutions accountable, and auditing all parts of NYC’s government. We have already set some strong goals for ourselves, under the right leadership the NYC Comptroller can be a powerful force for change by ensuring we stay on track.

The IPCC’s dire conclusions for the health of our planet require a serious commitment to action. Here are some steps that I’ve committed to take as NYC Comptroller:

  • As NYC Comptroller I will work to finance and launch Public Solar NYC. Not only will this create a municipally-owned, clean-energy utility on our rooftops, but it will also lower energy bills for numerous New Yorkers and create thousands of good green jobs.

  • The NYC Comptroller is the fiduciary for the pension funds. I’ll complete responsible divestment from fossil fuels, join alliances of shareholders to compel bold climate action by publicly-traded corporations (utilities, banks, transport, tech) and invest in the transition to clean energy.

  • As the city’s chief fiscal officer, I’ll assess the financial risks that the climate crisis poses for our city’s future, and use that analysis to transform the city’s spending, contracting, banking and infrastructure to mitigate climate risk and create economic opportunities.

  • As chief accountability officer, I’ll establish a dedicated audit team to focus on agency sustainability and environmental justice performance, hold public and private-sector actors to NYC’s ambitious clean energy targets, and closely watch oft-neglected investments in coastal resilience and climate readiness.

John, The climate crisis is not a theory, it is hard upon us. NYC is at the heart of the financial and investment decisions that shape our future.

We can and must lead the way on climate action. And that includes electing and holding our leaders responsible for taking clear actions and not crumbling under the weight of despair many feel.

I’m proud to be a firm climate action candidate and I hope to have earned your support. Help power my general election campaign with a contribution today. Every dollar in the door is allowing us to connect with more New Yorkers and organize them around not just the election, but also critical issues like climate action.

In this fight with you,

Brad
