It’s Friday the 13th, and across the country a nightmare is playing out for voting rights and for our democracy.

Yesterday, the Texas Republicans passed another disgraceful voter suppression bill. And the day before that, their GOP House Speaker signed arrest warrants for 52 Democrats because they tried to stand up to Texas suppression efforts. It’s dystopian.

But Texas wasn’t alone in attacking our democracy this week:

Wisconsin’s hyper-gerrymandered Republican legislature just passed a half dozen voter suppression bills that were vetoed by their Democratic governor. Because they can’t accept reality, they’re preparing to audit the 2020 election results in Democratic counties with an Arizona-style sham recount. Unreal.

Not to mention that in 49 out of 50 states the GOP has introduced voter suppression bills that are awaiting passage in state legislatures. While these bills get propped up by members of Congress who continue to propagate lies about the election, outlets like Newsmax and Fox News only serve to amplify the falsehoods. All of this to appease Donald Trump and lay the groundwork to overturn elections they cannot win on the merits.

This is a real threat. They are actively undermining public trust in our democracy and seeking to denigrate our elections for decades to come.

It’s more important than ever that we prepare for 2022 — right now. We need to push the Senate to pass the For the People Act and ban partisan gerrymandering, but no matter what, we need to mount a strong defense of our slim Democratic majorities. We can’t let Republicans and their conspiracy-driven agenda take back power. That would be a true nightmare.

The next few weeks and months will be pivotal in deciding which party controls Congress after the midterms. Republican donors are pouring millions of dollars into politicians who push Trump’s Big Lie. And Republican “leaders” like Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell will do everything they can to take back power.

It’s times like these that I’m so grateful to have you on our side, because with all of us working together there’s still reason to be optimistic about our democracy, and our future.
