Virginia issues mask mandate for schools

Students and staff at K-12 schools in Virginia will be required to wear masks indoors when the new academic year begins. Schools in DC and some individual districts in Maryland are also requiring masks.  (Debbie Truong / DCist)

Maryland is now among nation’s most diverse states

Maryland is now the most diverse state on the East Coast, with less than half of the population identifying as white, according to Census data released Thursday. This shift is partially due to an increase in Hispanic and Asian populations.  (WTOP, Post)

Growth in northern Virginia outpaces rest of state

Census data shows that northern Virginia continues to grow. The state’s population grew by 7.9%, with the fastest growth occurring in Prince William and Loudoun Counties. Still, that pace of growth is slower than previous decades.  (WTOP)

Montgomery County works through backlog of rental relief requests

More than 5,800 households have received more than $32 million in pandemic rental assistance from Montgomery County, but nearly 60% of requests still have not been processed. Officials are still encouraging people to apply.  (Kristi King / WTOP)

Greenbelt voters to consider reparations

MoCo sued over sale of historic black cemetery in Bethesda

The Bethesda African Cemetery Coalition is suing Montgomery County’s Housing Opportunities Commission for selling a parcel of the Moses Macedonia African Cemetery without getting court approval.
