In a misguided and unbefitting move, Maynooth University has joined forces with a notorious pro-abortion group to gather information designed to influence the debate on imposing censorship zones outside abortion facilities.

The online survey being circulated by the pro-abortion Together for Safety Campaign and Maynooth University claims to be collecting “tangible information about the prevalence of anti-choice demonstrations from abortion service providers.”There is absolutely nothing academic or scientific about the survey being conducted. Instead, it’s a highly political exercise from start to finish. In a social media post taking issue with the university, Senator Mullen asked: “Why is Maynooth University sponsoring political activism using the loaded term ‘anti-choice’ while presenting as academic work?”

He encouraged people to contact the university to express their concern, saying: “If you are a Maynooth student, alumni, family member helping with fees, taxpayer or concerned citizen, please let the university hear your views by emailing the Secretary of the Maynooth University Ethics Committee at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) and President of Maynooth University at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])

The drift away from serious peer reviewed research to politically motivated information gathering is very concerning. The decision of the Department of Adult and Community Education at Maynooth University to lend its support to this latest online survey does nothing but bring the college into disrepute.
Meet Baby Olivia: Stunning never before seen look at human life in the womb ()

The new footage and narration released by pro-life group Live Action is a stunning and illuminating look at the development of the unborn baby in the womb.

It’s a video that needs to be shared wide and far. From a single-celled human to a baby with a beating heart, brainwaves, fingers, and toes, the story of baby Olivia shows the remarkable beauty of a unique life within the womb.

The video was reviewed by accredited medical professionals, including Dr David Bolender, PhD, Cell Biology, Neurobiology & Anatomy, Medical College of Wisconsin and Dr Tara Sander Lee (Charlotte Lozier).

Stephen Donnelly was quick to placate pro-abortion lobby but the obstacles to censorship zones remain ()

Late on Saturday afternoon last, in a rather bizarre move, the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, issued a statement declaring his full commitment to introducing exclusion zones outside abortion facilities. The statement was in response to a front page report in the Irish Examiner claiming the government had shelved plans to introduce such zones.

As the Pro Life Campaign’s press release in response to the minister’s intervention said: “For the Minister for Health to frantically issue a statement on a Saturday afternoon stating his commitment to introducing ‘censorship zones’ shows just how subservient he is to the abortion lobby.”

In truth, the government should never have committed to bringing forward such legislation in the first instance. If enacted, it would represent a gross infringement of civil liberties and freedom of expression. Speaking on radio about the campaign to introduce censorship zones, PLC spokesperson, Eilís Mulroy said: “Some abortion supporters appear to spend most of their time looking for isolated examples to demonise and unfairly depict the pro-life movement. The truth however is that pro-life volunteers are extremely peaceful and respectful whenever they assemble in public. To introduce a law that specifically singles out and targets pro-lifers would be a totally unjust and discriminatory move.”

It’s very obvious that abortion supporters are using this story to push for more changes as part of the three year review of the new abortion law. The focus of this review should not be about trying to create wider access to abortion but rather on finding ways to reduce the spiralling abortion rate and putting supports in place to provide positive alternatives to abortion.

Stephen Donnelly has admitted he’s currently in contact with ‘stakeholders’ regarding the three-year review. It is utterly unacceptable that no representatives are included in these discussions who offer alternative perspectives to those who have overseen the rollout of the new law and the huge rise in the number of abortions taking place.

While the Minister for Health was quick to placate pro-abortion activists last Saturday with his statement, there’s no getting away from the legal and constitutional obstacles that stand in his way in bringing forward censorship zone legislation. It’s obvious from the recent answers he gave in the Dáil to parliamentary questions on the issue that he’s fully appraised of these obstacles and the curtailment of basic freedoms it would involve. He is aware too of the Garda Commissioner’s stated position that legislating for censorship zones is an unnecessary and disproportionate response to the issue.
4,000 individual e-cards sent so far to RTÉ's DG - It's time for Dee Forbes to reply to e-card senders! ()

The PLC's e-card to RTÉ is a small but nonetheless important feature of a much bigger campaign to force the National Broadcaster to account for its biased coverage of the abortion issue.

The e-card simply and reasonably asks the Director General to explain why pro-life supporters should continue paying the licence fee given RTÉ's outrageously biased coverage.

ELEVEN WEEKS on from the start of the campaign and still no response from the Director General! The refusal of Dee Forbes and RTÉ to give e-card senders the courtesy of a reply is fast becoming an issue in itself.

We're going to keep this campaign going until the Director General replies. There is an added urgency to the campaign given the egregious examples of bias on RTÉ in recent weeks, including the primetime screening of the pro-abortion film 'The 8th'.

Take 30 seconds to sign the e-card today if you haven’t done so already. And PLEASE, PLEASE share this link with family and friends.[link removed] ([link removed]) / ([link removed])
Action Alert - Are you a doctor or healthcare professional? (#1)

As readers may know, the Medical Council has launched a public consultation ([link removed]) as part of the upcoming review of its Guide to Professional Conduct and Ethics for registered medical practitioners. The closing date for sending submissions is now Wednesday 18th August 2021.

It’s a really important opportunity for doctors and healthcare professionals to make their views known and to influence the ethical guidelines governing medical practitioners for the next five years. We encourage every doctor to make a submission, even if it’s only a paragraph or two in length.

The amended Guide issued by the Medical Council in 2019 (after the new abortion law was introduced) greatly undermined freedom of conscience protections for doctors who don’t wish to participate in abortions in any way.

It is critically important that the Medical Council receive the message loud and clear that changes are needed in this and other areas of the Guide.

Thousands of cards have been sent already, but we need much much more to make a real impact.

Please help us spread the word by ordering your leaflets today. These can be given to friends, family and community, informing them of the campaign and encouraging them to send a card also.
