Today’s lesson, John? Hip Hop!
For decades, Hip Hop has dominated our sociocultural scene and has solidified itself as the most popular music genre in America and one of the top genres world-wide. Hip Hop music transcends age, ethnicity, religion, location, political affiliation, and socioeconomic status. Hip Hop art and culture has a true “melting pot” quality, and it remains interwoven in our nation’s cultural fabric, providing a stage for voices from all over to be heard and celebrated.
Now, we have the opportunity to bring hip hop the nationwide recognition it deserves. I am proud to join Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Maxine Waters in introducing the Hip Hop Resolution — a resolution to formally recognize the cultural impact of Hip Hop on American history and to elevate this innovative genre to its proper place among the great American art forms.
John, Hip Hop is not just a cultural phenomenon and a movement. It’s also a steadfast pillar in my own personal life, as a Black man who grew up in New York City during the golden age of Hip Hop. Will you join me and add your name to support this legislation and help solidify Hip Hop as a key American art form?

Here is what the Hip Hop Resolution does:
🎶 Designate August 11 2021 as Hip Hop Celebration Day to honor Hip Hop’s birthday and commemorate the “Back To School Jam” — organized by DJ Kool Herc along with his sister, Cindy Campbell, on August 11, 1973.
🎶 Designate the entire month of August 2021 as Hip Hop Recognition Month to highlight the contributions of Hip Hop to the broader American cultural landscape.
🎶 Designate November 2021 as Hip Hop History Month to reflect on the historical treatment and development of the culture.

The innovative and visionary genius of underserved Black and brown youth from the Bronx birthed the preeminent art form of our time. Today, all across the world, Hip Hop acts consistently top the charts — you can find rappers, breakers, and Hip Hop artists of every major language and ethnicity in virtually every country.
Hip Hop is undoubtedly one of America’s most prized creations, and I am proud to be a part of the historic movement to bring Hip Hop and its creators the recognition they deserve. Please join me in supporting the Hip Hop Resolution today, John.
